A smart city is a framework, predominantly composed of information and communication technologies, to develop, deploy and promote sustainable development practices to address growing urbanization challenges. A smart city uses digital technologies to enhance performance and wellbeing in real-world applications, such as traffic surveillance, automatic driving systems, and energy-saving systems. The information in these applications usually comes through multimedia data. For example, the videos in traffic surveillance contain both acoustic and visual signals; and sensory perceptions typically used in automatic driving system may need extensive multi-media data from multi-channel inputs in visual, auditory and motor pathways. Thereby, how to characterize the property of multimedia data so that it can be managed to enable different learning tasks of various applications in smart city, is essential. This requires researchers to develop robust and sophisticated models to classify, retrieve and understand multi-media information. In this special section, we look for cutting-edge techniques to efficiently handle multimedia data/information for sensing and computing for smart city.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

  • Multi-media information retrieval
  • Multi-label and multi-model classification
  • Deep learning-based image classification, semantic segmentation and object detection
  • Video surveillance and event detection for safety management
  • Image processing for unmanned drones
  • Remote sensing data processing
  • Modeling and optimization for smart grid
  • Vision-based recognition for new retail
  • Multi-sensor data fusion
